So much happens from the time you’re waiting to meet your baby through their first birthday. It’s likely to be the most dramatic transformation you’ll ever witness in your child’s life—and in your family.
It starts before they’re even here: the anticipation, your changing body, the last weeks of wondering who this little person will be. Then suddenly, they’re in your arms—a tiny newborn curled against your chest. A few months later they’re sitting, smiling, laughing, and showing off a personality all their own. And before you know it, you have a one-year-old who may be crawling, standing, walking, talking, and keeping you very busy.
Everyone tells you it goes fast. Unfortunately, they’re right. But I believe intentionally documenting this year helps slow it down, just a little. The experience of a luxury photography session gives you a reason to stop and really take in each stage—and something tangible to return to long after that stage has passed.
As a Los Angeles maternity, newborn, and baby photographer—and a mom myself—this is one of the reasons I created my First Year Collective. We document the story of your growing family as it unfolds and ultimately preserve it in an heirloom album your family can hold onto for generations.
Here are some of the biggest reasons I believe this chapter deserves to be documented.

Your baby’s first-year story doesn’t have to begin at birth.
A maternity photography session captures the anticipation before everything changes—the shape of your belly, the way your partner looks at you, older siblings waiting to meet the newest member of the family, and who you were in those final weeks before your baby arrived.
Including maternity photography in your First Year Collective gives you the opportunity to tell the whole story: waiting for them, meeting them, and watching them become themselves.

The baby you bring home from the hospital will look completely different just a few months later.
Newborn photographs preserve the tiny details: wrinkled feet, wispy hair, curled-up legs, sleepy stretches, and the way your baby fits against your chest. Even a few weeks later, those details have already changed.
By six to eight months, babies are often sitting independently, grabbing their toes, laughing, making eye contact, and showing off the personality that has been developing all along. By their first birthday, you may have a crawling, standing, or even walking little person in front of you.
Each milestone is worth remembering because you don’t get any of these versions of your baby back.

Your phone is probably filled with pictures of your baby. But how many of those photographs include you?
One of the most important reasons to hire a professional photographer throughout your baby’s first year is so that you exist in the story, too.
The way you hold your belly before you’ve met them. The way your newborn fits against your chest. The way your six-month-old reaches for you. The way you can make your one-year-old laugh like no one else can.
Those relationships are just as much a part of your baby’s story as their milestones.
During my Los Angeles maternity, newborn, and baby photography sessions, I always make space for photographs of your baby individually, but I also focus on your connection as a family. Because one day, your child won’t just want to see what they looked like as a baby. They’ll want to see what you looked like loving them. Think of this as a future gift to your baby.

You will take thousands of pictures on your phone during this year—and you should.
But professional photographs serve a different purpose.
Instead of another image disappearing into a camera roll, your sessions are intentionally photographed with the finished artwork in mind. We can create custom framed artwork for your home and build an heirloom baby album that tells the complete story of this chapter.
One day, you’ll tell them stories about this year. You’ll tell them how much you couldn’t wait to meet them. How tiny they were. What made them laugh. How they never slept. How obsessed you were with their cheeks. How they crawled before you were ready.
And while they won’t remember any of it, they’ll be able to see it.

There is so much happening during your baby’s first year that sometimes it’s difficult to take it all in while you’re living it.
Even before your baby arrives, you’re preparing. Then you’re adjusting to life with a newborn and keeping track of feedings and naps. Suddenly you’re starting solids, lowering the crib mattress, babyproofing cabinets, and planning a first birthday.
Setting aside time for professional photography gives you an opportunity to stop and appreciate the stage you’re actually in.
The curve of your belly. The newborn fuzz on their shoulders. The rolls on their wrists. Their brand-new teeth. The way they scrunch their nose when they smile. The way they still reach for you.
You get to be present for it.
And then you get to keep it.

When families book individual photography sessions throughout the year, it’s easy for time to get away from them. The six-month mark becomes eight months. Suddenly the first birthday is a few weeks away and you’re scrambling to schedule something.
A First Year Collective takes that pressure off.
We plan your sessions from the beginning, creating a cohesive visual story across the year. Because I’m photographing your family repeatedly, I also get to know you and your baby. By the second and third session, I’m no longer a stranger with a camera.
There is a continuity to the photographs, too, and together they tell one complete story.

When your baby is one, you’ll love these photographs.
When they’re five, you’ll love them differently.
When they’re eighteen and leaving home, that album will mean something entirely different than it did when you first received it.
And someday, it won’t just belong to you.
Your child’s First Year Album becomes part of their history. It’s a tangible record of what their earliest days looked like, who was there, and just how deeply they were loved—even before they arrived.
That’s why I believe professional photography isn’t only about preserving memories for the person you are today. Consider your family photographs a gift from present you to future you—and to the children who will one day inherit them.

Looking for a maternity, newborn, or baby photographer in Los Angeles or Burbank? I’d love to help you document the beginning of your baby’s story and create tangible artwork your family can enjoy now and pass down later. Inquire about the First Year Collective to begin planning your sessions.

Choosing between a studio or in-home newborn session ultimately comes down to your style and what you value most.
And either way, your baby’s first days or weeks will be preserved beautifully and forever.
If you’re expecting and trying to decide which type of newborn session feels right for your family, I’d love to help you plan an experience that feels natural, comfortable, and true to you.
